Cold War, again.....

It looks as though Russian - American ties continue to fall as the US imposed sanctions on seven defense companies including two Russian, Rosoboronexport and the state-owned warplane maker Sukhoi. Analyts say this could also lead to retaliation against American companies attempting to do business in Russia with Russian media calling it a declaration of an economic war. Many also believe this may have been in response to Russia's ties with Venezuela, whose leader Hugo Chavez is an outspoken critic of the United States.

Whatever the reason for the sanctions, ties between the two former enemies are continuing to sour, their have been recent exchange of words between Cheney, Bush and Putin as was noted during the G-8 meeting press conference when Bush and Putin exchanged comments on democracy and Iraq. View Video:

Poorer relations do not help either nations as more cooperation is needed to fight nuclear proliferation and resolve the issues with Iran and North Korea. While the Bush administration has been supporting democratic leaders in former Soviet states, to the dismay of Russia, the Kremlin has been supplying arms to US enemies such as Venezuela and Iran. During the Cold War many proxy wars were fought been the US and Russia, such as India-Pakistan, Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan.

Relations so far have not soured that bad as both nations have agreed to fight against Islamic terrorists who have become serious threats to both nations citizens. Russia has been in a fight in Chechnya for years while the US is bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both leaders need to work together since in the future we will need more allies in this fight to stop terrorism, it will not be won if our focus goes back to building more arms against each other. Both Russia and China have been increasing military spending while our defense budget is already nearing the half trillion mark not including our current war expenses. Major nations need to cooperate and fight against the current threat of extremism, another arms race will only lead to more proxy disputes and out of control defense spending.

Track the stats on your Reps!

I found this site a while back: http://www.govtrack.us/

It is a site where you can track the stats on your Representatives and Senators. It lets you set monitors and updates you by e-mail. They also have the option to search bills. Another neat feature they have is "cartograms", which is a distorted U.S. map to show statistics depending on the amount of votes in that area, so places like Manhattan appear larger to represent the larger amounts of the voting block.

If you design your own site, the webmaster, Joshua Tauberer, offers his data for use on your personal sites and projects in XML and RDF format. I am hoping to tap into this data mine and use it to create something similar on this site to make it more of a "portal" for politics. Source data:

Minimum Wage Game

The Republicans, who are feeling pressured by voters in an election year, brought up the minimum wage bill again after defeating a bill from Senator Kennedy a few weeks back, but with strings attached. The bill passed the House and now looks as though it will fail in the Senate. The strings attached were tax cuts for wealthy estates, Republican Senator Bill Frist also said that the issue of tax cuts and minimum wage would not be separated. It also puts Democrats in a awkward position since they would be voting for a minimum wage increase and tax cuts for the wealthy or against the minimum wage and against the tax cuts for the wealthy (Kind of issue John Kerry ran into, when he voted for one bill and that increased money for Iraq and against another similar bill since it required no accountability for the money).

I find it irresponsible that the Republicans would use politics on an issue that keeps many Americans in the poverty level even on two incomes. Fortunately a lot of states are realizing this irresponsibility on the federal level and taking charge themselves and increasing the minimum wages. Another issue being brought up is under the new law in states like Nevada where waiters and waitresses earn a minimum wage plus tips, businesses will no longer be required to pay them minimum wage since the Republicans say their tips make up the difference. The federal law would override the local laws, this is especially interesting since Republicans tend to be the party that believes in small government. The law would pretty much cut the wages of tip workers by a few dollars an hour which could mean people could no longer afford the houses they own, at $3 an hour is about $400 a month before taxes, Which for a low income family, is a lot of money.

I hope the Representatives and Senators of our states do the right thing and separate the issues of tax cuts and minimum wage, each one should get a separate up or down vote. If they truly believe in the minimum wage increase instead of just election tactics, the politicians should do the right thing and give the minimum wage its first increase in over a decade. Today everything from milk to gasoline to rent costs more, but we still pay the same minimum wage.
